The 2018-2019 varsity wrestling team ended the season this past weekend at the State Championship Tournament, held at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. The lone qualifying wrestler, sophomore Caleb Chaves, battled his way through the tournament to reach the podium at 126 lbs. From the tournament’s start on Friday (3/1) evening, Chaves went head to head in a bracket of the 16 best wrestlers (3A/4A) in the state. He immediately dominated his first opponent, the 9th ranked junior from Montgomery county, pinning him in the 3rd period after building a substantial points lead. Chaves’ only loss of the tournament came in his next match in the quarterfinals against the #2 ranked wrestler in the state. After getting the first take down and scoring the first points of the match, Chaves gave up a quick set of near fall points with time expiring and lost 4-2.
After weigh-ins again on Saturday morning, Chaves’ showed he had the physical and mental fortitude to break off a 4 match win streak to wrestle his way all the way back to his 3rd place finish. Along the way, he battled new and familiar opponents defeating the #6 and #5 ranked wrestlers in the state (one a junior, the other a senior), proving his 3rd place finish. Chaves also finished 2nd in the region and was the Anne Arundel County Champion at 126 lbs.
To get to the state tournament, a wrestler has to finish in the top 4 in their respective region. Arundel had 2 regional qualifiers in Chaves and freshman Adam Lake (120 lbs.). Chaves made it the final of the class 3A/4A East Regional tournament at Severna Park High School held last weekend where he carried a 3-2 lead over the #1 ranked wrestler (and eventual state champion) in the state, only to see it slip away in the final minute of the match, losing a heart breaker 4-3. Lake was a very nice surprise as a regional qualifier. He missed making the placement round (for State) by just a couple of matches. Lake will be on many opponents’ radar next season for sure.
Arundel also hosted the Anne Arundel County Championships two weeks ago. The team placed 8 out of 12 wrestlers in the top 8, with six of those eight placers finishing higher than their seed placements. Chaves was the only county champion with Lake finishing 4th, senior Vinnie Aruigemma (160) 5th, junior Amir Conwell (285) 5th, sophomore Sean Quinn (106) 6th, junior Devon Thompson (182) 6th, sophomore Clint Mills (170 ) 7th and sophomore Angel Borges (113) 8th.
Congratulations to the entire wrestling team on completing a season in one the most difficult sports to compete in. Thank you to all of our wrestlers, team parents, other parents who volunteered and all the parents, fans, coaches and administrators who all had a part in making this season successful on many levels! See you all in November.
