The season came to a close last night at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro with two varsity wrestlers taking 2nd place overall in the state!!!
In their first ever state finals appearances, Caleb Chaves (132) and Trevor Gagnon (152) both showed they belonged among the rankings of the top tier of wrestlers in the state.
Chaves, who placed 3rd in last year’s tournament, had to take the hard way right out of the gate. His placement in the bracket gave him a tough draw where he had to face the very highly ranked wrestler early in the quarter finals who defeated and sent him to the consolation bracket a year before. Chaves scored the first takedown and rode his opponent out in the final period to control the match and get the win. In the semi-finals, Chaves also soundly defeated yet another highly ranked wrestler who came into the tournament on a hot streak to make his first ever finals appearance. In an extremely hard fought and very close battle, and although Chaves worked continuously for an escape, pushing his opponent to the brink, Chaves could not get the call he needed that would have given him the championship with regulation ending in a 3-3 tie. In overtime, Chaves initiated the wrestling by going on the attack immediately and after nearly finishing his move, his opponent was suddenly awarded a takedown to earn the victory. Congratulations to Caleb Chaves for a great season!
For Trevor Gagnon, this entire season has been a comeback tour of sorts, after the disappointment of missing most of last season due to injury. Gagnon tore through his bracket thoroughly beating highly state ranked opponents with his savvy takedowns and tough leg riding from the top position. Once in the finals, Gagnon faced a rematch of last week’s regional finals opponent, the #1 ranked wrestler in the state whom he suffered his only legitimate loss of the season to. The result this time around was a much closer match, however it still proved to be just short in a 7-2 defeat. Congratulations to Trevor Gagnon for his great season and career!
Also of note, Chaves and Gagnon both earned their 100th career wins during the semi-final matches!!!
Three other wrestlers also competed at the state tournament. Congratulations to Adam Lake (138), Jaydon Bowden (160) and Nate Kloss (285) for their proud display of wrestling in the state tournament!!!!
