Arundel High School
Leanordtown High School
Arundel defeats Leonardtown in ITB extra innings 3-0 to become 2017 4A East Regional Champions.
It was a pitcher’s dual throughout the game.
Leonardtown had base runners on every inning of the game but were unable to score. Bases loaded in th sixth inning with one out and still the pitching and defense shut them down.
Grace Palmieri pitched 7 innings, 3 strikeouts. Palmieri relied on her solid defense throughout getting Leonardtown to ground out ten times. Palmieri fielded 9 outs herself including one line out and one pop up back to her. The outfield only saw three balls while Palmieri was on the mound.
Arundel’s offense struggled early against Senior Belsey-Polko, Coastal Carolina commit. The only batter to reach base the first time through the lineup was because she was hit by the pitcher. Only three batters put the ball in play and one was a bunt. However the WIldcats stayed calm and worked on their game plan. The second time through the lineup Cheyenne Starr hit a two out double but was unable to score. The third time through the lineup no one struck out and they all put the ball in play.
Finally in ITB (International Tie Breaker) where a baserunner starts every inning on second base. Madison Miller reached third on a passed ball and Kaelyn Lavin scored her on a sac bunt. However a low through allowed Lavin to reach first safely. Faith Cheetham then laid down a perfect bunt single. Steffany Jerman also bunt singled and Lavin scored the second run. Starr reached on an error and scored Cheetham for the third run of the inning.
Mills came in the bottom of the eighth with a 3 run lead. A soft liner to Steffany Jerman at second base recorded the first out and Jerman took a couple of steps over the second to record the double play and get the runner out at second. Leonardtown still continue to battle getting two more batters on before Mills struck the last batter out to record the win.
