Senior Kaelyn Lavin was not ready to end her final season at Arundel. Two outs, two strikes and a 10 pitch at bat ended with Lavin belting a home run over the center field fence for a walkoff come from behind win.
Arundel Wildcats defeated the Severna Park Falcons 3-2 today to advance to Regionals.
The Falcons put base runners on early. The Falcons Campbell Kline led off with a single and a sac bunt got her over to second. A ground out to first advanced her to third but starting pitcher Grace Palmieri struck out the batter for the final out.
In the bottom of the first Tiffany Jerman reached on a bunt single but Grace Palmieri hit a ground ball to short which forced out Jerman and was called out for runner’s interference.
In the top of the second Severna Park’s pitcher Marissa Heuer reached on a single. A sac bunt advanced her to second and E. Summer singled her in to put the Falcons up 1-0. The Falcons tried to get another run in but a play at home and a tag by Tiffany Jerman got the runner out at home.
Arundel was slow to get their bats going, a runner did not reach base after the first until the bottom of the fourth. Cheyenne Starr reached on a single. Palmieri walked and Madison Gentry singled to plate Starr to tie the game up. The Wildcats were unable to get another run across the plate and left three base runners on.
The Falcons answered back in the fifth when Palmieri walked Haley Manning and Heuer and Caroline Duffy plated Manning on a single. Caroline Mills came in on relief and struck out the next batter to get out of the inning. Falcons led 2-1.
The Wildcat bats went silent with no base runners in the fifth or sixth innings.
Top of the seventh two runners reached on errors and Heuer reached on a single to load the bases. Mills dug deep and struck out the next batter for the first out. A hard line shot went to right field but Lavin caught it for the second out and fired home and the runner at third held up. The final batter popped up to short to get out of the inning.
Mills hit a one out single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wildcats their first base runner since the fourth inning. Lavin then scored her on the walk off home run to win 3-2.
Arundel will travel to Leonardtown Thursday to fight for the Regional title. I know it is a long way away, but please come out and support your Wildcats.
